June 2014Vol. 15, No. 6NRCA's The Roundtable

In the latest issue of The Roundtable, the National Resource Center for Adoption (NRCA) focuses on educational well-being for older adopted youth and older youth in guardianship placements. The lead article, by Dr. Angelique Day, examines the detrimental effects that multiple placements can have on young people's academic careers, including lower rates of high school graduation and college attendance. Dr. Day also discusses resources and supports that are available to assist youth in care in reaching educational goals. These include educational provisions in the Fostering Connections to Success and Increasing Adoptions Act of 2008, such as the expanded eligibility criteria of Independent Living services and Education and Training Vouchers (ETVs); State postsecondary educational assistance programs; and the College Cost Reduction Act of 2009 (P.L. 110-84).

Other articles in the newsletter explore the importance of maintaining sibling relationships, the importance of relationships for Native American families, and adoption and guardianship with relative caregivers.
