The National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse recently released a report that identifies the 10 characteristics of effective teen fatherhood programs. To identify these characteristics, 18 fatherhood programs were assessed, including 1 that qualified as a model program and 3 that qualified as promising programs.
The successful programs:
- Partnered with community organizations
- Developed one-on-one relationships with young fathers
- Offered comprehensive services to fathers
- Used effective theories of change or logic in their program model
- Delivered services in interactive ways
- Used needs assessments or participant feedback
- Hired experienced, enthusiastic, well-connected professionals
- Incorporated materials appropriate for teen fathers and their culture
- Used incentives
- Provided mentoring services
