April 2018Vol. 19, No. 3Trauma-Effective Leadership Certificate
The University of Minnesota School of Social Work Continuing Education offers a certificate program on how to create a trauma-informed workplace environment that is effective at mitigating and ameliorating trauma. The program is open to professionals and leaders from the fields of human services, child welfare, behavioral and mental health, corrections, health care, and education from both the private and public sectors.
This fully online, rigorous, 9-month program uses a cohort learning model to teach participants about the following:
- What a trauma-effective organization looks like and how to define, measure, and recognize well-being
- New trauma-informed leadership techniques, based on an emerging understanding of the importance of both physical and emotional safety
- Increased awareness of the leader's role in shaping culture to be safe in both conscious and unconscious practices in the parallel process
- New skills and strategies to create a toolbox of trauma-informed leadership practices
The program is limited to 20 participants to ensure an engaged learning community. Major learning modalities will include course readings, real-time instructor-facilitated discussion with peers, instructor-created videos, peer-led discussion forums, critical response papers, organizational case studies and assessments, reflective writing, and a final project.
