April 2020Vol. 21, No. 3Evidence-Based Strategies in Violence Prevention Efforts

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a violence prevention technical package comprising a collection of strategies based on the best available evidence to prevent or reduce child abuse and neglect, youth violence, adverse childhood experiences, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and suicide. It is intended for use within the education, government (federal, state, and local), social services, health-care, business, justice, housing, and faith-based sectors of the community.

With the intention of helping to improve the health and well-being of communities and families, CDC technical packages are composed of three main parts:

  • Strategy—Lays out the direction or actions to achieve the goal of preventing violence.
  • Approach—Includes the specific ways to advance the strategy, including through programs, policies, and practices.
  • Evidence—Presents evidence for each of the approaches in preventing violence or its associated risk factors.

This technical package includes publications such as Preventing Child Abuse & Neglect: A Technical Package for Policy, Norm, and Programmatic Activities (PDF - 3,996 KB), Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Leveraging the Best Available Evidence (PDF - 3,700 KB), A Comprehensive Technical Package for the Prevention of Youth Violence and Associated Risk Behaviors (PDF - 4,194 KB), and other resources to help prevent violence.
