June 2006Vol. 7, No. 5Reviewing the Research on Substance Exposed Infants
A recent publication from the National Abandoned Infants Assistance Resource Center addresses the issue of the impact of substance abuse by pregnant women. Literature Review: Effects of Prenatal Substance Exposure on Infant and Early Childhood Outcomes reviews recent findings from the academic literature about the consequences of prenatal substance exposure on infants and children in the developmental areas of motor skills, cognition, language skills, school performance, behavior, attachment, and physical growth. Possible interventions and implications for policy and practice are also discussed.
