December/January 2013Vol. 13, No. 11Working With LGBTQ, Runaway, Homeless Youth

It is estimated that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth make up about 20–40 percent of the total number of runaway and homeless youth (RHY) in the United States and are overrepresented in the RHY population. Because LGBTQ RHY face a variety of issues and difficulties that other RHY may not, service providers need to be aware of these issues, how they may vary from youth to youth, and how to provide effective services. The National Resource Center for Permanency and Family Connections (NRCPFC) published a toolkit to help practitioners and researchers work more effectively with this population.

The information in this toolkit was compiled through a combination of interviews with agencies serving LGBTQ RHY and general RHY populations, as well as reviews of the literature on current programs and services. The toolkit materials emphasize evidence-based and evidence-informed programs and methods and the importance of sensitivity to cultural diversity. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Promising practices with LGBTQ RHY
  • Policy and legislation for LGBTQ RHY
  • Service gaps and limitations
  • Directions for future research

Toolkit for Practitioners/Researchers Working With Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) is available on the NRCPFC website:
